OPPOSITION RESUMES PROTEST ACTION CALLING FOR A CLEAN VOTERS LIST AND BIOMETRICS FOR UPCOMING ELECTIONS

The joint opposition has taken to the streets once again, resuming protest action aimed at pressuring the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) to implement biometric verification systems and ensure that the current voters list is thoroughly cleansed ahead of the 2025 General and Regional Elections.

The protests, which unfolded outside GECOM’s offices and in key public spaces, reflect mounting opposition concern over electoral integrity, with protestors accusing the Commission of dragging its feet on critical reforms needed to ensure free, fair, and transparent elections.

“We will not go into another election with a bloated list and no biometric system to verify voters,” one protestor declared, echoing the sentiments of several political leaders from opposition parties.

Opposition representatives argue that the existing voters list lacks credibility, and are calling for comprehensive cleansing measures to remove the names of deceased persons, duplicates, and non-residents.

Meanwhile, GECOM has indicated that discussions on electoral reforms are ongoing, but no final decisions have been made regarding the implementation of biometric systems.
