A 39-year-old pedal cyclist is now dead after sustaining injuries to his head and about his body when a minibus slammed into him while he was pedaling his bicycle on the Springlands Public Road, Corentyne, Berbice.
The deceased has been identified as Purshotam Tilak of Albert Street, Kingstown, Corentyne, Berbice.
Meanwhile, the minibus driver who is said to be the owner of the vehicle in question, hails from the Nigg Settlement, Corentyne, Berbice.
The accident took place around 11:45h on Sunday while the minibus was proceeding North along the Western driving lane and Tilak had been heading South along the Eastern side of the Springlands Public Road.
According to the driver of the minibus, the pedal cyclist “suddenly swerved from East to West” across the said road and ended up in the path of his minibus.
This resulted in Tilak’s bicycle colliding with the front ride side of the vehicle.
According to a police statement, upon impact, the pedal cyclist fell onto the road surface where he sustained injuries about his body and head.
“He was picked up in an unconscious condition and taken to the Skeldon Public Hospital, where he was seen and examined by a doctor on duty. He later succumbed to his injuries whiles receiving medical attention.The body was taken to the said hospital mortuary awaiting a Post Mortem Examination.”
A Breathalyzer test conducted on the driver of the minibus revealed no trace of alcohol in his system. He is currently in police custody assisting with the investigation.
