A 60-year-old pedestrian is now dead after he was allegedly struck down by a motor lorry (# GYY 1980) and then run over by the left front wheel of the vehicle at the junction of Houston Public Road, East Bank Demerara (EBD) and Nelson Mandela Avenue, on Monday (yesterday).
The deceased has been identified as Gansham Cooblall of Curtis Street, Albouystown, Georgetown.
Meanwhile, the driver of the motor lorry (#GYY 1980) is said to be a 36-year-old male resident of Garden of Eden (EBD).
HGP Nightly News understands that another motor lorry ( #GRR 9016) which was being driven by a 33-year-old male resident of Phase Three (3), Providence, EBD, was also involved in the accident.
According to a police statement, around 10:55h on Monday, the left side front of the motor lorry (#GYY 1980) came into contact with Cooblall and as a result of the collision, he fell onto the road’s surface, where the left side front wheel ran over him.
“An alarm was raised and the driver of the lorry (#GYY 1980) reversed and in the process of doing so, the rear of his vehicle came into contact with the front centre of the motor lorry (#GRR9016) which received damages to the front. The pedestrian was later picked up in an unconscious condition and taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital where he was seen and examined by a doctor on duty and pronounce dead. A breathalyzer test was conducted on the driver which revealed no trace of alcohol in his system.”
The 36-year-old driver is in custody assisting with the ongoing investigations.
