Porter, driver fined, sentenced to four years in jail for narcotics in minibus

Two days after being nabbed with several parcels of cocaine and cannabis inside a minibus, the driver and occupant were hauled before the Linden Magistrate’s Court, Region 10 (Upper Demerara-Berbice), where they were both fined and sentenced to prison.

Twenty-eight (28) year old Lawrence Harper, a porter of Lot 592 Cummings Lodge, East Coast Demerara (ECD) and 32-year-old Stanley Mann, a driver of Lot 7 Industry, ECD, appeared before Magistrate Wanda Fortune today.

The duo were charged with two (2) counts of possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking and plead guilty to both charges.

According to the police, the men were sentenced to four (4) years imprisonment  on each charge and fined $240,300.00; the sentences are to run concurrently.

On Saturday, the two men were arrested after police discovered a quantity of cocaine and cannabis in their possession at Mabura, Region 10, inside of a route #94 minibus that was reportedly returning from Lethem, Region Nine (Upper Takutu-Upper Essequibo).

Reports are that around 09:00h on Saturday, police ranks while acting on intelligence they had gathered, intercepted the vehicle and conducted a search during which 89 grammes of cocaine and 6,818 grammes of cannabis, were found.

The illicit substances had been concealed in several layers of clear plastic and hidden inside of the minibus.
