Rape accused freed of charge at Lethem Magistrate’s Court

After several years of deliberation, a 26 year old man is now freed of a Rape Charge.
According to the investigation, in April of 2017, relatives of a 15 year old reported to the Police that the man had raped the child who was under 16. He was subsequently arrested and charged.
On January 25th 2021 the accused appeared at the Lethem Magistrate’s Court before Principal Magistrate Alwyn Wilson where the charge was read to him but he was not required to plead to the charge and was released on $75,000 bail.
Further, on June 18th, the victim indicated to the court that she does not wish to proceed with the matter and laid an affidavit of declaration to withdraw the report made against the accused.
Subsequently, advice was sought from the Director of Public Prosecutions.
Furthermore, the matter was called in the Lethem Magistrate’s Court on Monday September 13, where the accused was present while no one appeared for the victim. The learned Magistrate then discharged the matter.
