A more progressive and protective Sexual Offences Act is on the horizon in Guyana, with nationwide consultations nearing completion, according to Minister of Human Services and Social Security, Dr. Vindhya Persaud.
The updated legislation is expected to feature sweeping reforms aimed at enhancing both accountability and victim protection, with a key addition being the establishment of a National Sex Offender Registry.
“We’ve listened to survivors, legal experts, and civil society groups across the country. What’s coming is a law that better protects vulnerable individuals and ensures consequences for offenders,” Minister Persaud told HGPTV.
The reform process, which has been ongoing for months, also aims to address reporting mechanisms, court proceedings, and support services for victims of sexual violence.
The Sex Offender Registry, in particular, is seen as a significant move toward greater transparency and public safety, ensuring repeat offenders are monitored and tracked under the law.
