Roundabout accident: Alcoholic beverages were seen in and out of the car – Police

The accident at the Eccles/Haags Bosch roundabout on the East Bank of Demerara (EBD) on Friday evening has left a 23-year-old security guard battling for his life in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at the Georgetown Public Hospital and two others under observation.

The Guyana Police Force (GPF) said the accident occurred at about 21:40h and involved motor car PAB 805, driven by Troy Humphrey.

At the time of the accident, Phillip Jeffery, a 23-year-old security guard of Queenstown, Georgetown, and Fulisa Burnette, a 19-year-old from Norton Street, Georgetown, were occupants of the car.

Police noted that the car was proceeding south on the eastern carriageway of the Eccles to Mandela Four-Lane Road at a fast rate when the driver failed to stop at the markings and collided with the roundabout.

As a result of the collision, the Water Fountain and other parts of the roundabout, along with the vehicle, were extensively damaged.

Humphrey, along with the two occupants in the vehicle, received injuries to their heads and other parts of their bodies.

They were all placed in an Ambulance and rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital. Humphrey and Burnette were admitted to the hospital for observation while Jeffery was taken to the ICU.

Jeffery’s condition is regarded as “serious,” as he suffers from a brain haemorrhage and a fractured right hand.

Police said, too, that open and sealed bottles of alcoholic beverages were observed in and out of the vehicle.

“Also, the driver narrowly missed hitting a parked Police anti-crime patrol vehicle, which was at the roundabout when the incident occurred,” Police said, noting that the investigation is continuing.
