Rupert Craig Highway accident: Wife admitted to ICU with head injuries

Sophia MacDougal, who was injured after her husband lost control of his car on the Rupert Craig Highway near the Infectious Disease Hospital at Liliendaal, East Coast Demerara (ECD), is in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the Georgetown Public Hospital.

This is according to the Guyana Police Force’s (GPF) Corporate Communications Unit (CCU), who noted that the accident occurred at about 22:30h on Friday.

MacDougal’s husband, Rabindra Surujdin, a Manager of the Institute of Health Science Education at the Georgetown Hospital, died on the scene.

Reports are that Surujdin was the driver of motorcar PAE 1926 and was proceeding east along the northern carriageway of the Rupert Craig Highway when he lost control of the vehicle near the Infectious Disease Hospital and collided with a concrete median.

As a result, the car spun out of control, collided with a concrete culvert on the northern side of the road, and then went into a drain.

The husband and wife were taken out of the vehicle in an unconscious condition by public-spirited citizens, and medical professionals arrived on the scene and pronounced Surujdin dead.

MacDougal was taken to the city hospital, underwent surgery, and is now in the ICU, suffering from head injuries. Investigations are ongoing.
