Salesman, accomplices arrested after “staging” robbery

A 26-year-old salesman/driver of Associated Brands located at ‘A’ Goedverwagting, East Coast Demerara (ECD) has landed himself in hot water after he allegedly ‘faked a robbery’ that was executed by his two (2) accomplices on Friday afternoon (yesterday) at the Stabroek Square, Georgetown.

The ‘robbery’ took place around 14:00h on the day in question where an undisclosed sum of cash, property of the Associated Brands company was ‘stolen.’

The salesman along with his two (2) accomplices are currently in police custody.

According to a police statement, the 26-year-old salesman and two (2) delivery men went the Stabroek Square to deliver the company’s products to their customers and receive money for the same.

“As deliveries were being made by the victim’s colleagues he stayed in the enclosed tray of the truck (doors were left open) counting the day’s sale when he was confronted by the two bandits, who entered the canter via the said door that was open and they demanded that he handed over the cash which he had in a black plastic bag.

He complied and handed over the money, after which the bandits made good their escape north along Water Street. Close Circuit Television (CCTV0 was reviewed but none supported the victim’s story.”

The cops stated that when the salesman was confronted about the situation, he confessed that he had concocted the story and “instead he had taken the day’s sales for himself.”

“He identified the colleagues who he arranged to collect the money from him and as a result of information received, a party of policemen went to Regent Street where one of the identified co-conspirators was apprehended with a red haversack on his back. A search was conducted on the haversack and Five Hundred and Two Thousand Six Hundred and Thirty ($502,630) dollars cash was found. When quizzed on how he came into the cash he said that same was given to him by the driver/salesman.”

He was then arrested and escorted to Brickdam Police Station, where he was told of the allegation and cautioned and gave a written statement, which was also obtained from the driver/salesman and their third accomplice.

They remain in custody as further investigations continue.
