SEA-BOB PRODUCTION PLUMMETS SIGNIFICANTLY DUE TO INTERNAL & EXTERNAL FACTORS

By Antonio Dey | HGPTV Newsroom

There’s been a notable decline in Seabob production in recent years, and it’s raising concerns within the fisheries sector. That’s according to the Chief Co-operatives Development Officer at the Ministry of Labour, who pointed to a mix of internal and external factors affecting output.

The official highlighted challenges such as rising operational costs, regulatory hurdles, environmental changes, and the impact of illegal fishing practices as major contributors to the downturn. Internal issues such as limited access to financing, outdated equipment, and the need for more excellent training and support for fisherfolk have also played a role.

Seabob shrimp is one of Guyana’s key seafood exports, and its decline threatens not only the livelihoods of the fishing communities but also the country’s economic potential in sustainable marine exports.

Authorities say efforts are being made to revitalize the sector, including partnerships with international organizations, improved cooperative structures, and better monitoring of fishing zones.
