In response to allegations by Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo that the firing of seven thousand sugar workers under the previous regime is responsible for the National Insurance Scheme’s present state of bankruptcy, the Leader of the opposition, Aubrey Norton, has claimed that the Guyana Sugar Corporation was not remitting the workers NIS contributions for several years.
