Sisters burnt to death at Mahaica

A mid-afternoon fire at Lot 60-61 Belmont, Mahaica, East Coast Demerara (ECD) has claimed the lives of two children.

Dead is 3-year-old Shameena Hardat and 9-year-old Anamika Hardat, who was living with a disability. The children were left at home without adult supervision.

The Guyana Fire Service (GFS) said it was alerted of a fire at about 13:07 h and immediately dispatched water tender 106 and crew from the Mahaica Fire Station.

When firefighters arrived on the scene, the entire building was engulfed, and despite their efforts, the two-storey wooden and concrete building was destroyed.

The building was owned by Ayube Mohamed Khan and occupied by 79-year-old Zaman Khan and his family of eleven. 

The cause of the fire is undetermined at this time, and investigations are being carried out by the Fire Prevention Department.
