SOPHIA MAN REMANDED FOR ROBBING TWO FOREIGNERS

A Sophia man was remanded to prison for the attempted robberies of two foreign nationals. Here are the details from Javone Vickerie within the courtroom.

27-year-old Sophia resident Myles Hinds called “Dereck” appeared before Senior Magistrate Leron Daly and pleaded not guilty to the two charges. It is alleged that on December 11th, at Church and Light Street, Hinds assaulted Catherine Fernandez and attempted to rob her of a $1,200 purse and $90,000 cash. It is also alleged that on the same day and location Hinds assaulted Mitsloris Vasquez and attempted to rob her of a makeup set, purse, and other items amounting to $155,000.Police Prosecutor Sanjay Singh told the court that Fernandez is a Cuban national while Vasquez is a Venezuelan National. In presenting the police’s case to the court, Singh said that on the day in question, the two women were walking along Church and Light Street when two men in a motorbike rode up on them.

Hinds, who was the pillion rider on the cycle and attempted to pulled away the women’s handbags. Singh further stated that when they refused he punched them to their faces. An alarm was raised and public-spirited person rushed to their aid and apprehended Hinds while the other suspect escaped.

The prosecution opposed to bail on the grounds that the accused was charged for larceny and break and enter before. He was also sentenced to two years imprisonment back in 2008 for wounding. The Magistrate remanded Hinds to prison until January 21, 2019.
