TEEN DROWNS AFTER CANOE CAPSIZES IN MAZARUNI RIVER

Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the drowning death of Renaldo Rampersaud a 19-year-old miner, which occured on February 1st, 2022.

The police report that about 16:00 hours between ‘Luw Luw’ Island Point and Banana Landing, Middle Mazaruni River, Renaldo Rampersaud drowned after the canoe he was in allegedly began taking in water and sank. Renaldo reportedly went under and never resurfaced.

Based on information received Renaldo Rampersaud and another male who are both employees of Nesha Joseph on her land dredge at Cashew Creek Backdam left the backdam about 15:00 hours in a woodskin boat (canoe) and went to Banana landing where they purchased some items from a shop. Whilst paddling the canoe on their way back, the tragedy occurred in the vicinity of Luw Luw Island Point. The other man managed to swim to shore.

Around 16:50 hours, Renaldo’s body was recovered in the the same area he went under by his brother Joshua Williams after a search party was launched. The body is presently awaiting transportation to Bartica thence to Georgetown for PME.

Investigation is ongoing.
