Toddler drowns in bucket of water while mother attends a funeral

The Guyana Police Force (GPF) said they suspect “no foul play” in the death of an 18-month-old female toddler who was found dead in a bucket of water by her seven-year-old sibling late Sunday afternoon, July 11 at Pottsville, Kwakwani Berbice River — while the 15-year-old sister was sleeping and their mother was attending a funeral.

The deceased has been identified as Orinda Auguste. According to a GPF press release, Orinda’s mother left her at home in the company of her other children — a seven-year-old male and a 15-year-old female — to attend a funeral. Between 5:30 p.m. and 6:10 p.m., police said the 15-year-old sister was upstairs with Orinda while her seven-year-old brother was downstairs playing

Later on, police said the little brother went upstairs to check on his siblings.“ Upon checking he saw his big sister sleeping. He made further checks and discovered the deceased lying head down in a bucket of water,” police said.

Orinda, according to the police, was removed from the bucket by her brother who then raised an alarm. She was pronounced dead on arrival at the Kwakwani Hospital Complex.

“No marks of violence were seen on the exposed part of the body. No foul play suspected. Investigation continuing,” the police release concluded.
