Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo, who also serves as General Secretary of the People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPP/C), says the Government of Guyana will engage the Donald Trump administration on the recently imposed U.S. tariffs to shield local exporters from economic hardship.
The Vice President announced growing concern from business owners and trade stakeholders over the 38% tariff slapped on a range of goods exported from Guyana to the United States.
“We will take this matter up diplomatically. Our exporters must not bear the brunt of international decisions they have no control over,” Jagdeo stated.
The move is part of the government’s broader strategy to ensure trade continuity, especially as Guyana expands its non-oil exports and forge new international trade partnerships.
Jagdeo emphasized that open dialogue and diplomacy will be key to finding a resolution, even as speculation swirls that the tariffs may be linked to geopolitical concerns surrounding Guyana’s growing ties with China.
