Two foreigners arrested after authorities discover cocaine on plane in Berbice

Quick action by police ranks in Region Six (East Berbice-Corentyne) led to the discovery of a foreign registered four(4)-seater Bonanza Beechcraft aircraft with hundreds of packages of cocaine on a sand trail at the Orealla Village, Corentyne, Berbice River.

The cops located the plane around 15:00h on Thursday (yesterday) after they received information about the foreign aircraft being on Guyanese soil.

According to a police statement, two men who are suspected to be Brazilians, were in the vicinity when the cops arrived at the aircrafts location and they were arrested.

“…an initial search of the aircraft revealed a quantity of suspected cocaine. Other ranks of the Police Force’s SWAT Team, Guyana Defence Force (GDF) and Customs Anti –Narcotics Unit (CANU) were mobilised and dispatched to the scene from Camp Ayanganna aboard the GDF’s BEL-412 helicopter. A thorough search of the aircraft was conducted and a total of 453 packages containing 453 kilograms of suspected cocaine were found, along with 2 Global Positioning Systems, 1 Radio Set, 3 Mobile Smartphones, 2 Identification Cards and the Aircraft Registration Documents.

The two foreign nationals, the suspected cocaine and the aircraft are in police custody as the investigations continue.
