Guyana secures non-permanent seat on UN Security Council

Guyana starting January 1, 2024, will represent Latin America and the Caribbean bloc on the United Nations (UN) Security Council after being elected on Tuesday.

The Security Council comprises 15 members, including five permanent members and 10 members are non-permanent members who are elected to two-year terms.  Guyana is a non-permanent member.

In a statement, President Irfaan Ali said that Guyana will take its responsibility on the Council with utmost seriousness and dedication. In fact, he said that the country intends to be a constructive and engaged partner with the members of the Council and the wider international community in the search for solutions to the myriad of momentous challenges that beset our human family.

“I express our nation’s deep gratitude to the Member States of the United Nations for the overwhelming support extended to Guyana’s candidature,” the Guyanese Leader said.

He added that Guyana looks forward to continuing to contribute to strengthening multilateralism and the rule of International Law to promote peace, sustainable development, human rights and respect for the people of our country and those across the globe.

Guyana served the Security Council from 1975 to 1976 and then again from 1982 to 1983.
