Massive fire engulfs Sharon’s Mall, ravages entire building

Millions of dollars went up in flames at the Sharon’s Mall located on Charlotte and King Streets, Georgetown, on Wednesday (yesterday) after what started as a small fire quickly turned into a massive blaze and completely destroyed the building.

According to Home Affairs, Robeson Benn, on Wednesday (yesterday), staff inside of the large building stated that they smelled smoke at around 11:00h and raised their concerns. Hours later, staff saw the smoke and they evacuated the building.

While the cause of the fire is presently unknown at this time, reports are that the blaze started on the second (2nd) floor of Sharon’s Mall and quickly spread upwards to the third (3rd) and fourth (4th) floors.

A press statement from the Home Affairs Ministry on Thursday (today) highlighted the importance of installation of smoke detectors, fire alarms, extinguishers and other fire appliances.

“The Ministry of Home Affairs regrets the loss of Sharon’s Building, overnight, due to a fire said to be of electrical origin…A detailed fire report will ultimately determine the true cause of the fire. Importantly, for buildings over two (2) stories high, the Ministry again wishes to advise of the need for Riser Mains with hoses and Fire Sprinkler Systems to be installed.”

The statement added that building inspections for electrical and fire safety compliance are mandatory for such buildings and must be diligently pursued.
