Venezuelan worker seriously injured in BK Quarries apartments fire

Fire broke out at the apartments that accommodates employees of BK Quarries Inc. at Mazaruni River on Thursday afternoon, resulting in a 34-year-old Venezuelan male worker suffering first and second degree burns, police said in a news release on Friday.

Ten apartments were extensively damaged in the “fire of unknown origin”, the release stated.

The injured worker told police, according to the release, that around 2:45 p.m. he was in his apartment asleep when he was awakened by the fire which had already engulfed his apartment.

He further told police he was able to run out of the building and raise an alarm. He was the sole person in the building at the time, police said.

“Workers responded with an onsite water tender and were able to extinguish the fire. However in the aftermath, 10 apartments were left severely damaged,” the release stated.

The injured worker was admitted at Bartica Hospital.

The fire is under investigation.
