TAXI DRIVER REMANDED FOR GANJA POSSESSION

A Parfait Harmonie Taxi Driver was on Monday remanded to prison for allegedly having in his possession more than two million dollars’ worth of narcotics. Here are the details from Javone Vickerie

38-year-old Ben Cumberbatch, a taxi driver of Parfaite Harmonie was on Monday arraigned before Magistrate Faith McGusty at the Georgetown Magistrates Court.

Cumberbatch was allegedly busted by Police at Little Diamond, East Bank Demerara with $2.2M worth of cannabis and was remanded to prison. Cumberbatch denied that on December 13th, at Little Diamond, EastBank Demerara, he had in his possession, 10 pounds of cannabis for the purpose of trafficking.

Attorney at Law Melville Duke, who represented the accused made an application for his client’s pre-trial liberty on the grounds that the suspected drugs were not found on his client possession either did he had knowledge of it. In presenting the case of the police, Prosecutor Ceon Blackman explained to the court that ranks intercepted Cumberbatch in his motor car at Little Diamond. Blackman further outlined that when ranks searched the trunk of the vehicle Cumberbatch was in, the suspected cannabis was found concealed in a spare tire.

Magistrate McGusty remanded Cumberbatch to prison until January 7, 2019, and transferred the matter to the Providence Magistrates’ Court.
