Alexis Turpin walked out of the High Court on Wednesday morning a free woman after she was acquitted of the murder of her reputed husband Sherwin Johnson.
Turpin who was on her second retrial for the offense was freed after Justice Jo-Ann Barlow upheld a no-case submission made on her behalf by Attorney-at-Law Damien Da Silva.
In 2021 during the first trial, Turpin was charged with her lover, 39-year-old Sterfon Barlow, for the murder of her husband. Last year, the accused was first tried for the capital offence before another High Court Judge. However, the 12-member jury could not arrive at a verdict and a retrial was ordered.
It is said that Turpin and the late Johnson have a child together and lived together at Chapel Street, Lodge, Georgetown. According to reports, Johnson arrived home on July 2, 2016 and found Turpin in bed with Barlow. A heated argument broke out which led to Turpin and Barlow both stabbing Johnson several times about his body with a knife. They also allegedly lashed him with pieces of wood and a crowbar.
Johnson was hospitalised for several weeks at the Georgetown Public Hospital but later succumbed to his injuries.
