Woman jailed for operating a brothel to be slapped with 9 counts of Trafficking in Persons

Mayelin Cordova, 41, who was slapped with a six months jail term for operating a brothel, is expected to be further charged with nine counts of Trafficking in Persons.

Cordova, a Venezuelan national and businesswoman of Byderabo Road, Bartica, Region Seven, is accused of trafficking nine Venezuelan females between March 15 and April 30, 2023.

The Guyana Police Force (GPF) noted that Cordova exploited the women between Crusher Hill and Barakat Backdam, Cuyuni Mazaruni River, Region Seven.

“The victims reported the matter to the Guyana Police Force, and members of the Trafficking in Persons Unit of the Criminal Investigation Department Headquarters conducted an investigation,” the Police said.

Based on the investigation, legal advice was given by the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) for Cordova to be charged with nine counts of Trafficking in Persons.

The Guyana Police Force’s TIP Unit, in efforts to combat Trafficking in Persons, will continue to work with other stakeholders to conduct intelligence-led operations, spot inspections, awareness, and training in every region of Guyana.
